Tuia is a genus of coniferous trees and shrubs, in the family Cupressaceae, native to North America and eastern Asia. They are evergreen foliage plants that can grow from 3 to 60 m tall.
Most species of tulia have upright trunks covered with reddish-brown fibrous bark. The shoots are flattened and grow in a single plane. The leaves are scaly, 1 to 10 mm long. They are ornamental trees, planted in gardens and parks. They can be found as solitary specimens or in groups, but especially as hedges.
In terms of light, thuja th thrives best in direct sunlight, but can also tolerate lateral shading. It is also a frost-hardy species and grows best in loamy, calcareous soils that drain water well. It does not tolerate compacted soils and moisture, conditions that can favor the onset of disease. Therefore, water moderately, only when the soil is dry on the surface.
C Pruning: These are trees that are suitable for pruning into various decorative shapes. Shape maintenance pruning is done annually in May. Only annual saplings should be cut, not old branches. It is very important to plant only balled plants (soil on the roots), and planting can be done from fall, after the first frost, until spring, when the ground is not frozen and there is no danger of frost.
The plant is gently removed from the pot/bag surrounding the bale so as not to spread the soil too much. For propagation, the species can be propagated by seed or cuttings, as follows: seeds are harvested in the fall and sown in the spring, after which they are left in place for 2 years, or propagation by cuttings, which is done in the summer, with semi-sprouted portions of branches. This is a more difficult process, recommended for professionals. Diseases that can affect the tuile are: necrosis of branches from the outside inwards, necrosis of branches from the inside outwards and wilting. The most common pest that can occur on tulips is the tsetse louse. Important: Due to the outer crown being stripped on the inside, the plant becomes bald. This is a natural phenomenon and requires no treatment. They are well suited to urban environments.
Disease control treatments can be carried out at any time of the year, provided that there is no rainfall at the time of application (and in the following hours). Also, temperatures should not be very high and, of course, depending on the time of year the treatment is carried out, there should be no danger of frost. Sprinkling is NOT recommended.
